We receive a lot of pictures from our customers of fish caught locally using our gear but this one is a particularly good story.
“Dogfish” Dave Wilson has been a customer of ours for over a decade and after a recent visit to us he sent me an email.
Dave fished Wednesday 14th March 2012 on Crimson Tide out of Poole Skippered by Fred Smith.
They spent the day drifting over the Shambles for Turbot and Brill and a few of the guys on board had been getting bites but lost fish during the day due to hook pulls.
Dave decided to utilise a method referred to as the “Hair Hook” This is when you attach a very short piece of Fluorocarbon line to your main 4/0 hook that runs along your Sandeel bait leading to a small size 1 hook.
The idea is to give you and extra hold on any shy biting target fish.
After a short time, Mr Wilson hooked into a very good fish and the fight began.
He took some stick from his fellow crew members after playing the fish for around 15 minutes, but when he explained that he might be fighting this worthy adversary on a size 1 hook, they cut him some well-deserved slack!
Sure enough Dave hauled this magnificent specimen to the boat and enlisted the help of his friend to net it. His friend (sorry, we do not know your name) has been a commercial angler for many years and exclaimed “This is a seriously heavy Turbot mate”
And yes you guessed it the fish was lip hooked fair and square with the tiny size 1 “Hair Hook”.
The fish weighed in at 29lb 2ozs! (Current British Record Turbot - 33lb 12ozs).
We believe that Dave’s fish is a new Wessex boat record.
